Armenians are a loving people – we may not have tons of land but we have major heart. I never felt that as intensely as I did when I decided to move to Armenia for 6 months. Everywhere I turned, I began to notice — and feel — love swirling around me: friends linking arms, relatives hugging, lovers embracing. Whether romantic, platonic, or familial, the warmth and hospitality that’s exchanged in Armenia is palpable. So it’s fitting that as soon as I arrived, I started seeing hearts everywhere I looked: in the shape of leaves, rocks, flowers, as graffiti and art, and in so many other forms.

Finding heart after heart became more than a symbol of love, but also an expression of Armenia’s vibrant spirit. I had visited numerous times before — the first time in 1991, the year of Armenia’s Independence — however, experiencing the country as a resident versus a tourist was far different. To an outsider it may seem that people in Armenia are stoic, but if you take the time to look inside their hearts, you will see a different side: a people that open their doors for you no matter what time you knock and take the shirts off their back if you need warmth. These are the Hearts of Armenia.

Half of the proceeds of this book will be donated to the Women’s Support Center in Armenia, an AIWA- SF initiative dedicated to helping women and families follow their heart.
