By providing numerous examples and illustrations from archaeological sites in the Armenian Highlands (on the territory of historical Armenia) and its adjacent regions, the author explains how the concept of symbolic thinking was widely applied in both anthropomorphic and imaginary compositions that were preserved in the structures and architectural constructions of the local population from as early as the Old Stone Age. These symbols were continuously developed and maintained well into the late Medieval period. They include dots, lines, circles, quadrangles, triangles, crosses, eternity symbols, and others, such as images of plants and animals which were all used in the structures.

The author argues that the floor plans and spatial structures of the residential, religious, urban and monumental archaeological remains discovered in the Armenian Highlands are founded upon a symbolic interpretation of both a natural and a philosophical worldview.

These original symbols are the rectangular (square) shapes used in structural floor plans, which are linked to the concept of the proto-maternal deity, connected to the earth and the archetypal first female.

The second original symbol is the round (circular) shape used in structural floor plans and spatial solutions linked to the concept of the proto-patriarchal deity, which in turn evokes the archetypal celestial father.

The floor plans and spatial solutions of the structures are oriented towards the sun and arranged according to the cardinal directions of the world, reflecting the symbolic four-sided division of the landscape.

The structures are divided into horizontal and vertical layers within spatial solutions, demonstrating a triple-tiered conceptual symbolism.

This volume of extensive research discusses in detail the problems of the original and evolution of compositional prototypes, which are integral components of the pre-Christian Armenian culture. It also reveals the remarkable depth and sophistication of the indigenous symbols that have withstood the test of time, leaving an indelible mark on Armenian art, culture and architecture.
