Papken's parents were killed during these deportations, two sister were abducted on the road, and two brothers disappeared while serving in the Ottoman army. Left alone, Papken fended for himself and survived for three years, until the end of the war, when he fled to Syria and then Lebanon. He eventually settled in France where he struck new roots.
