The book is a selection of Armenian myths, legends, epics, ballads beginning with the legend of Hayk and Bel, the birth of Vahagn, up to the folk epic of Sasna Tsrer (Daredevils of Sassoun). The book includes other interesting sections, among them are Greek myths and legends, Bible stories etc. Matenik is aimed at schoolchildren, 6th graders in particular. It's a continuation and addition to the textbook of Mayreni – 6. Matenik will interest large circles of readers.

Ընթերցանության այս գիրքը ծաղկաքաղ է հայկական առասպելների, վիպերգերի, ավանդությունների, լեգենդների, բալլադների, սկսած Հայկի և Բելի մասին պատմող առասպելով և Վահագնի ծնունդով մինչև Սասնա Ծռեր էպոսը: Գրքում ընդգրկված են նաև հունական առասպելներ և լեգենդներ, աստվածաշնչյան պատմություններ և այլ հետաքրքիր բաժիններ: «Մատենիկը» նախատեսված է դպրոցականների, հատկապես 6-­րդ դասարանցիների համար: Այն «Մայրենի - 6» դասագրքի շարունակությունն ու լրացումն է: «Մատենիկը» կհետաքրքրի նաև ընթերցող լայն շրջանակների:
