A lyrical portrait of 94 year old Zarouhe Najarian. Remembering and the passing on of stories are the leitmotiv as the viewer, along with three 10 year old girls, explore the major turning points of this fiercely independent Armenian woman's life: surviving the genocide of her people, growing up in a Beirut orphanage, immigration to America, growing up in a Beirut orphanage, immigration to America, 50 years as a seamstress, defying convention by divorcing the husband of an arranged marriage in order to create a second family with her ""true love."" After his stroke and early death she lived as a single mother and then alone for the next 40 years.
Whether she is making dolmas, singing to her great grandson, modelling for her son the painter, or tending her garden which she has made into the ""aki"" of her childhood in Turkey, Zarouhe possesses a markable capacity for happiness and an unselfconscious physicality that bring dignity to her aging. She is a model for surviving the hardships of life by letting go of bitterness and refusing to be sad. Her mother whose face she can't remember comes finally back to her in a dream. Ever present throughout the film are the sensual pleasures of fruit, art and Armenian music. Zaroohe's earthy wisdom is a gift to us all: ""You have to believe in something. It doesn't matter what: the sun, the sky, this little rock."
