Professor Armen Marsoobian will give an illustrated talk about his research into this history of his family, the Dildilians, a prominent family of Armenian photographers. For nearly a century, members of the Dildilian family practiced the art of photography in Ottoman Turkey, Greece and the United States. The surviving photos, numbering in the many hundreds, record a crucial half century of Armenian culture, with the earliest dating from 1888, when Tsolag Dildilian opened the family business in central Anatolia, first in Sebastia and later in Marsovan and Samsun on the Black Sea coast. Marsoobian has employed these photos and the family story to counter the Turkish government’s silencing of the Armenian Genocide. Four major photography exhibitions have taken place in Istanbul, Marsovan, Diyarbakir and Ankara. His books have been translated into Turkish and his work has garnered significant media attention.

Armen T. Marsoobian is Professor of Philosophy at Southern Connecticut State University. His books include Fragments of a Lost Homeland: Remembering Armenia. He is a descendant of the Dildilian family.
