Description
In 2002, two years after the Hover Chamber Choir of Armenia won a gold medal medal in a competition with 300 choirs at the International Choir Olympiad in Austria, the U.S. based Pomegranate Music label released Armenian Voices, a beautiful CD that featured quite a range of choral works.

Six Fables is an even more cohesive work in that the songs make up a form of morality theatre based on fables written by Armenian Renaissance fabulist and monk Vardan Aigektsi (1170-1235). As with La Fontaine and other fabulists, Aigektsi’s satirical and allegorical stories, which were set to music by Stephen Babatorosyan especially for the choir, generally depict animal characters that have human-like virtues and vices.

The tracks often feature and juxtaposition of chorus and solo performances while orchestral support is by the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra Strings. The album opens and closes with “The Healing Bird”, ostensibly a dove whose symbolic powers hold the key to moral redemption. As performed by this choir, Six Fables is an impressive work whose appeal is potentially as universal as Christian mystery plays and commedia della arte and other works based on ancient theatrical traditions.
