Description
Here is the eighth release in the most authoritative CD series of Khachaturian's music ever issued. Armenia's greatest composer is presented by his foremost champion, fellow-Armenian conductor Loris Tjeknavorian, with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. The most popular pieces of all are contained in his two great ballets Spartacus and Gayaneh. This album presents the three ballet suites in the composer's own final selections from his 1956 score Spartacus, quite simply the greatest Russian ballet since Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. The thrilling tale of the uprising of Roman gladiators under Spartacus makes a vivid impression on stage, and the music of the three suites largely follows the action. As the theme to The Onedin Line, the glorious Adagio for Spartacus and Phrygia has become a familiar favourite.
