The book is a selection of Armenian myths, legends, epics, ballads beginning with the legend of Hayk and Bel, the birth of Vahagn, up to the folk epic of Sasna Tsrer (Daredevils of Sassoun). The book includes other interesting sections, among them are Greek myths and legends, Bible stories etc. Matenik is aimed at schoolchildren, 6th graders in particular.
