Description
Not since Spoon River Anthology have we had a book of poems so uniquely and evocatively American. Like Masters, Kherdian anthologizes the lives of his brethren settled beside another Midwestern river—the Root River of Kherdian's rooted past. In this book he provides portraits of overfifty of these people, boys and girls, and then as he grows, the young men and women with whom he experiences the rites of passage that are instrumental in helping to make him the man he becomes. For in the end, the single portrait that emerges is of the grown man who has made these poems. It is his book, but he knows that all of these lives are also his, for we are all one, moving into and out of our days, and the lives we find there, that are cherishable because our life—each life—needs cherishing, and the right to continuance in time.
