The artists who illuminated manuscripts in medieval Armenia were called "makers of flowers." In "The Book of Flowers," written on the eve of the Stalinist purges and in the shadow of the Armenian Genocide, the writer Derenik Demirjian distilled a lifetime of study of medieval Armenian and visionary poetry into this evocation of the secret garden of Armenian culture. The Armenian text accompanies James R. Russell's English translation and introduction discussing both Demirjian's sources and the history of his own time.
